Celebrity green quiz raises £40,000 for Eden’s new rainforest experience

May 13, 2011

A quiz night hosted by comedian Marcus Brigstocke and TV designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has raised more than £40,000 for the Eden Project.

Nearly 200 guests took part in ‘The Big Green Quiz’ held in the London arts venue, The Tabernacle, on May 11.

The event was part of Eden’s 10th anniversary celebrations and raised funds for the educational charity’s planned ‘Rainforest Experience’ which includes a new treetop walkway and learning centre in the Rainforest Biome.

Writer and broadcaster Rosie Boycott, a non-executive director at Eden, chaired the quiz committee, and guests were greeted by the project’s co-founder and chief executive Tim Smit and managing director Gaynor Coley.

Teams were tested on environmental questions by the quizmaster, Marcus Brigstocke, while Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen hosted an auction with prizes such as an Amazon cruise with Eden’s scientific director and world authority on rainforests Professor Sir Ghillean Prance.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen said: "Ten years on shows that Eden is not a flash in the pan with its creativity and longevity. It's exciting when people come together to raise money for a specific cause.

"The Eden message can appear abstract in London and an event like this gets everyone involved and linked back to Eden to show us that all of these issues start at our own front door."

Simon Dickson, director of fundraising at Eden, said: “'We wanted to do something a little bit different from a traditional fundraising gala.

“A quiz seemed a really good way of getting people involved and having fun while raising money for a great project."
