Eden Project and Cornwall College course to help businesses cut carbon and boost bottom lines

October 7, 2011

Businesses in Cornwall are set to benefit from new training to help them reduce their carbon footprints and increase their bottom lines.

The Eden Project has joined forces with Cornwall College and the Environmental Skills Network to create the new course called Carbon Management in the Workplace.

The one-day programme, which leads to a nationally-recognised qualification, gives people practical skills on cutting carbon emissions in the workplace, at home and in the community.

It will be run monthly either at one of the Cornwall College campuses or at Eden in Bodelva, near St Austell. Course fees are £250 per delegate to include course materials, exam fees, certification, lunch and refreshments.

The first course will be on October 26 at Cornwall College’s Plymouth conference venue The Business Space on Mayflower Street from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Delegates will learn about the impact of climate change, how to identify sources of greenhouse gas emissions within their own organisations, and how to calculate their companies’ carbon footprints using carbon calculators.

There are no specific pre-requisite qualifications for the course and there is a short exam paper at the end of the day.

The course is accredited by the Government’s Qualifications and Credit Framework and all successful candidates will receive an Edexcel Award in Developing Skills (QCF) Carbon Management in the Workplace Level 3.

Dan James, Eden’s development director, said: “More and more businesses throughout the UK are starting to measure, monitor and reduce their carbon emissions.

“The Carbon Management in the Workplace course aims to give participants a broad overview of the importance of effective carbon management.

“Some of the tips will be quick wins which require little or no investment while others will be longer term projects.”

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: “The green sector in Cornwall is a key industry for the county’s future growth, so we’re excited to be helping businesses get the skills and qualifications they need to support this growth.

“The facilities available to learners on this innovative new programme are unrivalled and we’re expecting a high take up from ambitious and forward-thinking organisations in the county.”

The course is also offered on an in-house basis at a company's premises for groups of 10 or more delegates and can be made bespoke to meet the needs of a company's individual sector or business. The price for this version of the course is available on application.
