Eden Project opens its doors to young people taking national qualification in the arts

August 2, 2011

The Eden Project has joined Arts Award Welcome, a badge scheme offered by Arts Award, the national qualification for young people in the arts. The Arts Award Welcome badge announces that Eden Project supports Arts Award and can help young people aged 11-25  to achieve aspects of their award programme – such as taking part in the arts, meeting arts professionals, leadership and arts apprenticeships.

The Eden Project provides a perfect backdrop for young people to learn about the natural world, allowing them to explore nature through their many year-round education initiatives including numerous interactive workshops that encourage learning across a range of subjects such as geography, art and science.

Programmes of particular relevance to Arts Award include Bright Young Things, an annual celebration of young people’s work across the creative arts.  Two core school programmes, Art at Eden and Quite Write focus on how Eden uses the arts to share its messages with visitors.  Year-round Eden offers a rich programme of events on site that engages people in environmental issues and helps them develop their own creative talents.

Schools Programme Manager, Sam Kendall says, “At Eden we’re known for using art as part of our quirky and unconventional approach to getting environmental and social issues across to our visitors. The arts, in their broadest sense, are fundamental to Eden with artistic pieces nestling amongst the greenery, so getting involved in the Arts Award is a perfect fit for us.”

Arts Award is a national qualification which supports young people aged 11-25 to develop as artists and arts leaders. Arts Award is run at three levels Bronze, Silver and Gold and is offered at Levels 1, 2 and 3 on the QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) and accredited by Ofqual.

“Young people working towards an Arts Award need the support of the professional arts world in order to experience the arts and develop their skills in a real environment. I’m delighted that so many organisations are using the Arts Award Welcome badge to publicise their commitment to Arts Award.” Laura Gander-Howe, Director of Learning and Skills, Arts Council England
