Eden hosts free conference on cutting carbon for businesses in Cornwall: October 11

September 2, 2011

Companies in Cornwall can find out how UK carbon reduction targets are going to impact on their own operations at a free business conference being hosted at the Eden Project.

‘Carbon Matters – It’s no longer business as usual’ takes place on Tuesday 11 October from 9am to 1pm. It will highlight the key issues driving the change towards a low carbon economy and inform people about the business opportunities available to those who act early.

The Government has committed the UK to two decades of drastic cuts in carbon emissions heralding sweeping changes to the way that businesses operate, deal with customers and trade with each other. The public sector and large businesses are at the forefront of the low carbon agenda through changes in procurement policies.

The conference will provide a unique opportunity to hear from leaders of policy and progress on the carbon agenda. In addition, experts will address issues such as why carbon is important to businesses’ bottom lines and what makes up a carbon footprint. There will also be guidance on the practical support and help that is available to businesses in Cornwall.

Speakers include Shaun McCarthy, Chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London, Mike Berners-Lee, author of ‘How Bad Are Bananas? The carbon footprint of everything’and David Wathey, Head of Sustainable Procurement at the Department of Health. Gaynor Coley, Managing Director of the Eden Project, will also be joining the array of local and national specialists.

More that 170 delegates have already signed up for the conference and include senior managers and directors from a broad range of businesses and organisations around Cornwall.

Paul Holmes, Eden’s Sustainable Business Development Manager, said: “The shift towards a low carbon economy has been building for years and it will have a real impact on all businesses, similar to that of the internet. Just as we have learnt to be computer literate, we must learn to adapt quickly to become carbon literate.”

The conference is free, but spaces are limited. To reserve a place, go to: http://carbonmatters.eventbrite.com/. For more information on the event, contact Paul Holmes on pholmes@edenproject.com or 01726 818811.
