Eden visit sprouts great ideas for the Nanpean Nippers

July 6, 2010

Children who were upset after their nursery garden was vandalised were delighted to visit the Eden Project for some new ideas on recreating their green space.

The youngsters arrived at Nanpean Nippers Nursery one morning in June to find the garden they had lovingly created for months had been trashed.

The under-fives were disappointed to find their carefully planted pots of veg and flowers had been smashed, their lawn had been vandalised and their pet guinea pig had been released.

After hearing their heart-rending story, Dave Saunders, a Growzone coordinator who runs planting workshops at Eden, collected a large variety of seeds, plants, compost, tools and books from across the Eden site and shop to present to the children at their morning assembly the next day.

He then invited the Nanpean Nippers to visit Eden to get some ideas for recreating their nursery garden.

As well as visiting the Biomes, the children visited the great Eden outdoors, where they learnt about gardening all over the world in the Global Gardens. They also visited the Growzone, where they were able to see how household items, even boots and shoes, can be used to plant seeds.

Donna Brown, Nursery Supervisor at Nanpean Nippers, said: “After the devastation at the Nursery, we were so pleased that Dave was able to come and give us so many resources, as well as his growing experience.

“We’d like to thank him and everyone at Eden for all of their hard work. Along with all the other kind people who donated time and resources, we have created a beautiful and tranquil place for children to explore. The visit to Eden has given the children a chance to see nature at its best and give them ideas for their own garden.”

Dave Saunders said: “I  was so happy to see the Nippers here at Eden. I hope they get inspiration from the Global Gardens for their own growing. It was a pleasure to help with restocking and reconstructing the nursery garden and I wish them luck with gardening in the future.”
