Get the creative juices flowing with art afternoons at the Eden Café

September 23, 2011

The Eden Café in  St Austell's White River Place will be offering a series of afternoon art classes, starting on Thursday September 29, from 3:30pm until 5:30pm.

During the first class, which will be free, art teacher Jo Salter will give a portrait demonstration while painting St Austell Town Mayor Councillor Sandra Heyward.

The following classes will run every other Thursday until December 8 and cost £5 each, which includes a cup of tea and a cake. The Art Afternoons, which are part of the St. Austell Live programme of events, will cover a range of topics and give people the opportunity to try their hand at still-life and figurative drawing as well as painting portraits.

Jo Salter has taught art at both secondary and tertiary levels, specialising in painting, printmaking, experimental drawing, mixed media, landscape and portraits. Originally from Glasgow and educated in Aberdeen and Dundee, he is now based in Lostwithiel. As well as running the Eden Café Art Afternoons and the Lostwithiel Life Drawing Group, Jo works as a graphic designer, with a studio in Lerryn.

Emma Mansfield, St Austell Live programme co-ordinator, said:  “St Austell Live is all about trying to bring the community together and what better way to get to know people than by capturing them in a drawing or painting.”

The St Austell Live programme has been funded by a grant from Cornwall Council for the Eden Project to undertake an events programme aimed at attracting more people to the town centre.

The programme is part of the Eco-communities Programme of Development awarded to Cornwall Council by the Department of Communities and Local Government.

The classes take place on September 29, October 14 and 27, November 10 and 24 and December 8.

Spaces are limited, so people are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. Either sign up at the Eden Café, email St Austell Live at staustelllive@edenproject.com or drop in on the day and see if there are any spaces.
