Howzat! Cricket fundraiser between Eden and People and Gardens

August 19, 2011

Staff from the Eden Project will be going up against volunteers from People and Gardens in a fundraising cricket match on Sunday September 4.

The twenty over match will take place at the St. Austell Cricket Club, which have helped to set up the match and given the use of the cricket grounds for free. There will also be stalls, food and a bouncy castle, all helping to raise money for People and Gardens.

People and Gardens is a unique therapy and support scheme that relies on funding from Adult Social Care (formerly Social Services) and Cornwall Partnership Trust. Based at Eden’s Watering Lane Nursery, it gives people with emotional and physical impairments the opportunity to learn different aspects of growing and selling vegetables, from sowing seeds and potting on, to planting and harvesting, to weighing and packing.

The vegetables that the People and Gardens Team grow are sold in veg bags to staff at the Eden Project and people in the local area. The veg bags are also available in the Eden Café, situated in White River Place.

Bill Simpson, who volunteers with Eden and People and Gardens said: “As a cricket coach myself, I introduced the team at People and Gardens to the game. They are all really keen on sport and took to it straight away.

As well as giving the team an opportunity to play on a proper cricket ground, we hope that the match will help raise some money and make people more aware of the great work that People and Gardens does.”

Gates open at 1pm and the first ball will be bowled at 2pm. Tickets cost £2 and children come in free. For more information on People and Gardens and how to order a veg bag, go to: www.peopleandgardens.co.uk
