Europe: Making a difference to Cornwall

Minister for Europe Caroline Flint MP is visiting Cornwall today to see how the European Union is helping to create opportunities and improve the quality of life for individuals and families in Cornwall.

The region will receive a total of £350m of EU funding for local projects between 2007 and 2013.

In her first visit to the region as Minister for Europe, Caroline Flint will visit a number of projects which have received EU funding, such as Jamie Oliver’s “Fifteen” restaurant, the Eden Project, the Marine Skills Centre and the Combined Universities Cornwall Falmouth campus, which received £37 million of EU investment.

Caroline Flint said Europe has brought real benefits to Cornwall including increased investment and more jobs;
“I have seen for myself how EU funding is making a real difference to people and communities in Cornwall.

In 2009 the European Union has a decisive role in tackling the economic downturn and leading the world on climate change – protecting our planet and our economic future for the next generations.

Whether providing training for chefs or mariners, and supporting new life in communities with projects such as Eden, our strong relationship with the European Union is proving what added value it can bring to our lives.”
