Survive and thrive at the Eden Project this summer

July 13, 2009

Survival is the name of the game for the whole family at the Eden Project this summer with den building, food foraging, rope-making and fire lighting among a range of amazing activities.

Bush craft experts will tell tales of real life survival stories and show visitors how to hunt for wild food and medicinal plants. They will also be making rope from nettles, honeysuckle or willow trees and demonstrating creative ways to light a fire from the age old style of the fire-drill, to using some modern wire wool and a battery.

The summer season also sees the return of Eden’s highly popular, hands-on den building workshops, giving families all the materials they need to make a great hideout with a view of the world’s largest greenhouses.

The workshop team provide chunks of wood, trails of rope and many different kinds of sheets, pegs and tactics to make the best dens.

There are some exciting new play areas to be discovered by children and adults alike around Eden this summer including The Big Draw outside Zubb Zubb café where doodles and artistic creations can be chalked onto giant blackboards.

The Bluff next to The Core, Eden’s Education Centre, will house The Beat, a large percussion set where visitors can bang out some funky rhythms. The Nest, a large climbing space, sits just outside The Core, and up in Wild Cornwall there is a network of large logs for the twinkle-toed to balance along.

Also near Wild Cornwall the Sound Tubes will be echoing with voices from visitors talking to each other from one path to another down the line.

Chris Rowe, Eden events planner, said: “For the six weeks of the summer holidays we are treating visitors to fantastic fun-filled days with an exciting learning curve of how to survive in the wild.

“Not only are these skills important to know but it’s also an education into getting out of the house and spending time with the family.”

“With the new play areas popping up around the site and a fantastic range of fresh, locally sourced food in our restaurants, summer at Eden will be unforgettable.”
